Recently Eastern Rider Phil Jones’ little brother Dalton Jones was paralyzed in an accident. He is recovering and Phil and his father are facing enormous bills and costs associated with Dalton’s care. The Charlotte BMX Community is coming together to lend a helping hand in raising some much-needed cash for Phil and his father in their time of need.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 11th - GRAYSON SKATEPARK - CHARLOTTE, NC
1pm till Dark - $10 jam to ride all afternoon and win some rad prizes and help out.
Pads and Helmet are required to ride the park, so be sure to bring yours.

The park is located at the Naomi Drenan Recreation Center - 750 Beal Street, Charlotte NC 28211

starting monday i’m joining the web team at www.heels.com ! they have their operations in a cool old building on tryon right beside 277, and sell high-end, designer heel womens shoes. right now it’s weborder only, but they are converting the front of the shop to a nice apt. only style boutique.
i’ll be helping out with layouts/css, java/jquery, php, ajax, a little of everything.
even better, i’ll be working with Jason Keath (twitter @jakrose) who put together the recent BarCamp Charlotte.

I can’t even tell you in words how excited i am to:
1) HAVE SOME EMPLOYMENT!
2) NOT have a long commute (Total maybe 10 minutes. i could totally ride my bike)
3) work again in a CREATIVE environment that seems to foster teamwork and learning alongside LOTS of GOOD production.

and yes, again, it all boils down to high heel shoes.

so alison and i have been trying to manifest things we want to happen. and my newest and most important one was that my pending unemployment claim from jan would finally be reviewed.

today it was! i got a call from a friendly representative from the Unemployment Security Commission who got my side of the situation and confirmed everything. then i got another call about an hour later saying that the claim was approved and that i would get 8 weeks of back “pay”.

alison and i need this extra income boost so bad right now. don’t get me wrong or get the wrong idea however, i would rather be working. that’s my next manifestation!

my new goal is to update as much as i do my other sites. here’s the current happening list:

1. unemployed. currently looking for … anything. i’ve been interviewing all over the place for site mgt. jobs. not as many creative positions as i would have liked, but right now i’m willing to do just about anything (with exclusions!) for employment.

2. doing QueenCityVegan.com which is awesome and a lot of work. a much needed website to help the vegan community here make sense of this bbq and beef burger filled city!

3. trying to ride now that my still-broken pinkie is feeling good and able to handle more than a session of shredding. i’m really looking forward to some warmer weather soon.

4. COCO! she’s the new 1.5 yr old female black lab that alison and i got and she’s awesome! she loves the cats and is a great indoor dog with zero problems. perfect member of the family.

5. facebook. i’ve been blowing it up with people from my old high school and people i haven’t heard from in forever (whats up!)

alison and i went downtown to see barack speak. us, and about 30,000 more people. we got there late, apparently. the line was about 2 miles.
we saw his motorcade. he got out and waved. not at us. but he did wave.

so when alison and i visited atlanta on saturday, we went to cosmo’s vegan shop which is a nice little all-vegan boutique a little south of uptown. we met one of the owner’s, ken, and spent around a hundred bucks on various treats, including a tube of TEESE! teese is mozzerella style, and made by a soy dairy in chicago. ken said it’s the best he had tried, both for flavor and melting. i was excited to experiment. so we ordered brixx pizza for dinner monday night and i went to town adding chunks of teese to my pie. it melted great and tasted awesome! it also made my tummy and bottom a bit loud later in the night, but that’s acceptable at our house! anyways, heres some photos, and a link to the teese website

how to spend over a grand at ikea in one day

so the flood pretty much destroyed all the ikea furniture that alison and i had purchased over the last few months, so we decided to drive down to atlanta for a one-day replacement trip on saturday. the catalog and website were perused for hours on friday night as we meticulously plotted our attack on the store. if you aren’t familiar with ikea, or the massive chasm of a store they have at every location, then you don’t know that you can easily get lost and/or overwhelmed in a short time if you don’t plan what you want, and where to get it. the store is layed out with a massive showroom, broken into sections like workspace, bath, linens, kitchen, etc. we knew we needed: a bed, a large bookshelf for bedroom, office desk, office bookcase, tv stand, coffee table, end tables, lamps, and various kitchen, bath, and bed items. was all this going to fit in the element? this was going to be fun…. BLLLAAAHHHHMMMPP, BLLLLAAAAHHHMMMPPP, the alarm goes off at 6am on saturday. who gets up this early on a weekend? oh yeah, people who are determined! we hit the road around 7am, armed with iced starbucks, and a full tank of gas (purchased at 3.50 a gallon!!! what a deal now huh?) i had googled and saved all the directions to ikea at atlantic station, from atlantic station south to cosmo’s vegan shop (more on this later), and then from there back to 75/85 home. i shot one photo along the way:

so we arrived at 11am with pretty much nobody there yet. the high gas prices may have been keeping people at home today. i took a stack of catalogs for everyone back in charlotte “one per customer please sir” yeah right! we ventured upstairs to start logging isle and stack numbers to get stuff in the warehouse. we quickly filled two huge shopping bags with linens, kitchen, and bath items. rugs don’t like flood waters very much. i picked out a new office desk and shelf for the wall, and a new bookshelf. i needed this, as my desk was a 5+ year old hand-me-down from mangler. not good for productivity. alison picked out the bed, bookcase for bedroom, and we both choose the tv stand and coffee table. whew. on downstairs. ikea furniture is packaged perfectly, usually down to one or two boxes. we ended up with 11 boxes! was all this going to fit? my total was $270. alison’s total was $780. ouch. on to the loading area. it fits!!!! we can’t believe it. 3 hours in, and the back of the element is weighed down!! onward to cosmo’s vegan shop. this place was AWESOME with all kinds of clothing, foodstuff both dry and frozen/cold, books, and cosmetics. the owner, ken, chatted with us for a while and i picked up 2 indie-punk style vegan cookbooks i had wanted for a while. and that was that! 4 hours later and one subway sandwich for both of us and we were home, tired and ready to start painting and assembling! more photos soon….

mangler put up a new tumblr, which inspired me to kick this one into high gear. here’s some life updates:

new job at tesa tape inc. as the webmaster for the north american division. based near southpark in a nice office with awesome colleagues. the work pressure is intense, but i am delivering and raking in the dough!
alison and i found a new apartment in the chantilly neighborhood, on the other side of independence from plaza/midwood. it’s really nice and quiet and we are moving everything in this week.

first night at fuel

i picked up a few nights a week at fuel with ben to make some cash. i forgot how nice it was to go home with cash instead of waiting all week on a paycheck. back to metheney at 10am tommorrow, hopefully a good amount of work there this week. you gotta check out www.justinholt.com with the new layout. 100 degrees again tomorrow? i’ve got some tiny peppers and tomatoes growing! leo cut down the hobo hideout today too!
